Spreading Awareness

Where would we be without the knowledge that we have today?

Talk about it with others...

Whenever I tell someone that I have seizures they normally assume I am talking about grand mals, which is the most intense form of seizing. They think of convulsing, tongue biting, falling on the ground, and that the trigger must have to do with flashing lights...in my case NONE of that is true. SO, I now try to educate those who are unaware that there are many different forms of epilepsy, and that not all seizures are alike. If you don't tell people, they willl never know any different... I strongly encourage you to help spread awareness and share your stories.

The advancements in the field of epilepsy have come a long way, but there is still so much to be known and discovered. We now have devices that can regulate seizure activity, surgeries to remove the parts of the brain causing seizures, and other forms of treatement involving being non- invasive.

Here are some helpful facts I have learned recently:

> Epilepsy affects 2.2-3 million in the U.S

> 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy or reocurring seizures in their lilfetime

> Half of epilepsy patients are women (of these women 24,000 give birth each year in the U.S)

> Your menstral cycle can affect seizures This is called "Catamenial Epilepsy""
(so keep a tracker of when your seizures occur)

 >Some anti-seizure medications can counteract the birth control pill

Other Methods of Treatement
Not until almsot two years ago had I even heard about the KETOGENIC DIET,  ironically enogh it has been around for decades, but none of my doctors had ever discussed this alternative for me. I believe that if you haven't tried everything else already in the form of medicine, or even surgery diet should still be brought up as an option. "You are what you eat" as they say.
Get out there..and go somewhere.
Epilepsy affects 65 million people worldwide. according to cureepilepsy.org. Wow, that's crazy! So why not go travel the world and meet as many different people that you can, while seeing maginificent places and cultures at the same time. You never know who you will strike up a convesation with (even if it's in broken English). Those happen to be some of my favorites ;)
